Carbon parts are manufactured by hand. Cutting and arranging the weave layers, curing the plastic matrix and milling the blanks all take several hours. A particular challenge is the subsequent painting. To bring out the unmistakable depth effect of the carbon weave, the parts are painted several times. Each layer of paint must then be dried and sanded. After the final layer of paint has been applied, the carbon part is polished to a high gloss (except for open-pore carbon versions). The carbon parts are graded according to current BMW standards. Only in this way can it be guaranteed that the high requirements, for example in terms of ageing and temperature resistance, are met without cracking or paint peeling off the substrate and yellowing of the matrix is avoided. This high degree of manual work and qualification effort is what justifies the price.
