The M Performance side skirts emphasise the sporty appearance of the vehicle. Compared to the standard series, they offer a unique and clear possibility of differentiation thanks to their design in high-quality visible carbon fibre. The inserts were developed specifically for the specified vehicle series and are 100% fit-to-fit. The shape and design of the side skirts are perfectly adapted to the geometry and appearance of the vehicle and are coordinated with all other M Performance Parts.
After several tests, the M Performance side skirts were approved according to the strict quality standards of the BMW Group. All legal requirements are met in the process. A specific registration with the TÜV or a general operating authorisation (ABE) is not necessary, as the inserts are already type-approved with the complete vehicle or are mentioned in the EC operating licence.
Material information: The skirt inserts are made of carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP, Carbon) and are sealed with clear lacquer. The material is UV-, temperature- and water-resistant. The carbon components are manufactured by hand. The cutting and arrangement of the fabric layers, the curing process of the plastic matrix and the milling of the raw parts takes several hours. A particular challenge is the subsequent lacquering. To enhance the unmistakable depth effect of the carbon fabric, the parts are lacquered several times. Each lacquer layer must be dried and then sanded. After applying the final lacquer layer, the carbon part is polished to a high gloss (except for porous carbon versions). The carbon parts are graded according to current BMW standards. Only in this way can it be guaranteed that the high requirements regarding ageing and temperature resistance are met without cracking or detachment of the lacquer from the substrate, preventing yellowing of the matrix. This high degree of manual work and qualification effort are responsible for the price.
